Some people ask specifically for a male or female Divorce Attorney. The rationale is that a male may be tougher or conversely a female may be more sympathetic to women.

It is certainly important to feel comfortable with the Attorney that is chosen and to feel that there is an understanding as to what is needed to achieve the desired result.  However, it is not wise to generalize characteristics based on whether the lawyer is male or female.  There are 2 factors that should be considered when choosing a Divorce Lawyer:

  1. Experience
  2. Cost

The Attorney chosen should be experienced in the kind of Divorce that you have.  You may have no issues and a short marriage or you may have complex custody or asset issues.  In consultation with the Lawyer, he/she should explain the issues in your Divorce so that you are aware of the kind of experience needed.

Cost is another very important factor.  Most people cannot afford an uncertain financial outcome.  Make sure to discuss the fees as well as what you can expect as the Divorce moves through the court process.
